Whooper Swans are annual, but scarce migrant or winter visitors to the Sheffield area. The three adults in the top photograph by Richard Hill were found on the middle res at Redmires on 11th October 2003 at 1530h until they left SW at 1755h. Some pass straight through or come down only briefly, but occasionally a small party will winter in the area, when they often visit a number of localities during their stay. A total of 16 Whooper Swans through at Redmires during 1st November 2003 included this party of 10 below, also photographed by Richard.

The party of  nine in the photograph below was first seen flying north at Staveley SF on 25th March [in1984] and subsequently at Rivelin Dams and Redmires Reservoir, where this 'record shot' [AJM] was taken shortly after they flew in on 26th March. The bottom photograph shows an injured bird at Rother Valley CP taken in 2000 by Carl Corbidge. Last updated 18th January 2004
