Swallow

Recently fledged Swallow at Redmires, early September 2001

The Swallow is a species well known to everyone and is often seen as the symbol of summer. The first major arrival is usually in early April, although in most years there are one or two in late March. They breed throughout the area and can be seen hunting overhead just about anywhere in the area during the summer months. Probably the most interesting time of year though is late-summer and autumn when the species can be seen in large numbers perched on overhead wires etc prior to the long journey back to warmer climes for the duration of our winter. The size of these gatherings and the numbers recorded at the visible migration watch-points can give an indication of the success, or otherwise, of the breeding season. This recently fledged juvenile was photographed by Richard Hill at Redmires on 2nd September 2001. It was still being fed by its parents at a time when many others were gathered on the dam wall before flying off. Last updated 4th November 2001
