Common Redshank can be seen in the Sheffield area in all months, either on passage, on breeding territory or over-wintering. The total breeding population is small as there isn't an abundance of suitable habitat and numbers fluctuate annually, depending on water-levels.  In the uplands, one or two pairs will breed on wet moorlands, especially those close to reservoirs. Unfortunately some of these areas, such as those bordering the dams at Redmires, are still being drained to provide drier grazing land, and numbers here are lower than in the past. In the lowland east of the area, breeding takes place on wet meadow-type areas or sewage farms. Upland birds tend to move to lower areas after the breeding season, thus supplementing the  lowland population. These photographs, of two different adults, were taken at RVCP on 10th June 2001 by Mark ReederLast updated 13th June 2001.
