Long-tailed Duck

Long-tailed Duck is a rare visitor to the area and is by no means annual. The best month to find one is November when the majority of those in the Sheffield area have been located. A small number have stayed around for several weeks or over-wintered. This is one species for which I could readily adopt the American name, Oldsquaw, which for some reason seems to be perfectly apt. This photograph by Carl Corbidge shows the winter female at Wragg's Pond in the Loxley Valley from 4th to17th December 1999, after which it was probably forced to leave as the pond froze over.  Last updated 11th June 2000
