Kestrel

Photograph Copyright © Carl Corbidge
Up to about the end of the 1980's the Kestrel was without doubt our most common diurnal raptor. Since then it has probably become a close run thing, with Sparrowhawks having recovered rapidly from previous traumatic times. But Kestrels are still widespread and, judging by the numbers we were seeing hunting over local moorlands in late summer 2000, they are still doing fine. They can still be seen hovering over the M1 and A1 motorway embankments, a favoured and relatively undisturbed source of food. The top photograph of a female was taken by Carl Corbidge at Storrs in November 2000. The shot below, also a female, was taken at RVCP on 25th November 2001 by Richard Hill. This bird was in the habit of perching on the bird table at Meadowgate. Last updated 28th November 2001.
