Hybrid Ducks

A hybrid duck at Endcliffe Park, Sheffield

As mentioned elsewhere in these pages, duck identification can be full of pitfalls. Apart from the perennial 'escape issue', many of our wildfowl species are prone to hybridisation.  The hybrid specimen shown above has been in the Sheffield area for several years now. This is a close up taken by Richard Hill when it was on the ponds in Endcliffe Park, where it spends much of its' time. But it has been seen regularly at Redmires where it often spends autumn days amongst Mallard, Teal and Tufted Ducks. There, to be fair, it is often more distant, but it has been variously recorded as Pintail, Common Scoter [despite the white wing-flash], Red-crested Pochard and Gadwall. There has been much debate over the exact constituent parts of this bird, without any firm conclusion. And no, I'm not about to put my head on the block. I did that once ...... but that's another story !!!  Last updated 24th February 2001.
