The Hen Harrier is the most persecuted raptor in this country. In the Sheffield area, small numbers can be seen on autumn and spring passage and one or two might over-winter, often ranging over a wide area. Not so long ago there were always a small number of regular winter roosts on the Sheffield Moors, but these are no longer reliable. The English breeding population is very low and spasmodic. A pair did breed not so far outside the SBSG area, at a Derbyshire locality in recent years, but did not repeat the following year. These shots of a ringtail quartering a South Yorkshire moorland, were taken by Richard Hill on 7th October 2001.  Last updated 10th November 2001.
