Most Greylag Goose records in the Sheffield area refer to birds of feral origin and most are of singles or small numbers which associate with the similarly feral Canada Geese flocks in winter, at eastern waters such as Harthill Res and RVCP. Feral birds now breed in most years at localities in the south and east, such as Renishaw Park and consequently parties of 20 or so at these localities are likely to be feral. Probably the best chance of seeing wild Greylags is during autumn and winter when other geese, mostly Pink-feet, do move across country and across the area. Larger parties flying through high approximately east to west or west to east at these times are more likely to be 'better qualified'. For example; 230 in 2 skeins flying SE over Howden Res on 31st December 1997 were most likely to be wild as were c.400 ["mostly Greylag Geese"] SE over Derwent Edge on 7th January 1996. This close up photograph of a feral individual at Rother Valley CP was taken by Mark Reeder in early February 2001.
