Goosander

Photograph Copyright © John Rochester
Goosander is a localised but resident sawbill, breeding in small numbers at various places along the River Derwent, where it is often not seen until the females emerge with chicks. This photograph of a female with her brood was taken on the R.Derwent at Chatsworth Park in June 2000 by John Rochester. In late summer, post-breeding parties gather together to feed and roost. At this time, Tyzack's Dam next to the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet often attracts a small number, up to 20 or 30, in the early mornings. These birds often join others from the Derwent Valley at Barbrook Res, where they gather during late summer and autumn afternoons and evenings and have been known to reach 90 or more in number. Please note, however, that Barbrook Res is only accessible by and viewable from one of two public footpaths across Big Moor, although it can be 'scoped from the top road. Better views of this attractive sawbill can be had during the winter months when large parties gather on several of our larger water bodies, such as RVCP, Wentworth Lakes, Thrybergh CP, Catcliffe Flash, Treeton Dyke and Blackburn Meadows NR. The lower photographs show a copulating pair, close to the shore at RVCP on 18th February 2002, taken by Doug Chinnery. Last updated 10th March 2002
