Garden Warblers are not always so confiding as the individual shown in these two photographs by Mark Reeder at RVCP on 13th May 2001.  A summer visitor, the bulk arrive in the Sheffield area in early May with most leaving during September. At the extremes, [at the time of writing] the earliest date recorded was 7th April [in 1998] and the latest was 31st October [in 1979]. It has a fairly wide-spread distribution in the area, but is restricted by habitat, preferring areas of scrub or woodland edge, often along the courses of our rivers. It is the plainest looking of our common warblers, but identification is probably aided because of it. However, it is difficult to assess true numbers and is probably under-recorded due to its' often skulking habits. The comparatively garbled song is not always so easy to distinguish from the normally richer notes of the BlackcapLast updated 18th May 2001.
