Fieldfare

There is no finer autumn activity than standing at one of the migration watch-points and witnessing the passage of hundreds of  Fieldfare. October and November can offer spectacular movements of the species. In an average year it can be expected to record several thousands moving through the area. In a good year, even more. In autumn 2000, for example, Keith Clarkson counted over 30,500 mostly flying SW through Rod Moor alone, all during October and November. More often than not, only a small proportion of these birds over-winter in the Sheffield area, but occasionally larger numbers do so. In any event, one or two flocks of around 500 or more are recorded in most years, feeding in the fields during the winter months. In harsher winters, small parties may visit sub-urban gardens to feed on berries or at bird-tables. By February, those which flew further south in autumn may be seen moving back northwards, but rarely in such an impressive fashion. Occasionally the odd bird may stay on long enough to be heard singing. The photograph above shows Fieldfares moving SW at Redmires and was taken by Richard Hill on 4th November 2001. The middle and lower photographs were taken by Carl Corbidge at Loxley Chase in November 2000. Last updated 16th July 2003.
