Dunnock

Dunnock. Loxley Common, Sheffield, April 2001

Apart from the highest, most barren of our moorlands, the Dunnock is one of Sheffield's most widespread species. Often skulking, it isn't always apparent but for it's thin trill of a song during the spring and summer months. The most recent Survey of Parks, Gardens and Open Spaces [The Magpie number 5, 1999] found the species to be the 7th= most widespread species and the 5th most widespread breeding species although, it is not surprising to see that it did not make the 'abundance league' at all. Previously referred to as Hedge Sparrow, an obvious misnomer [just look at the bill shape], it does in fact belong to the accentor family and thus its' Sunday-best name should really be "Hedge Accentor". But Dunnock will do for us.  This photograph was taken by Carl Corbidge at Loxley Common in April 2001.  Last updated 4th January 2002.
