Coot

This interesting shot of a preening adult Coot, was taken by John Rochester on 25th April 2001 at RVCP. Coots are common and widespread in the area, breeding on most of our lowland waters and, in the west, on the slower running rivers and some of the lower lying reservoirs. They are, however, a rare sight at places such as Redmires and Barbrook. There is a marked increase in numbers from September onwards on low-lying eastern waters, especially RVCP and Thrybergh CP. This is likely to be due, in part at least, to movement from upland areas, but also by influx from outside the area. As suggested in "Herringshaw and Hornbuckle, 1985", it is possible that some of these additional birds are continental migrants. In recent years, numbers have continued to increase to the year end, with large numbers still present into January, but decreasing thereafter. The photograph below shows a bird on a typical nest, except that this platform was in a very obvious and vulnerable position, directly below the car park embankment at Catcliffe Flash in March 2002 [Tony J Morris].  Last updated 1st April 2002
