The Common Sandpipers of the Derbyshire Peak District have been the subject of prolonged investigation by Dr Derek Yalden at Manchester University. Although it has been recorded in the area in every month, winter records are scarce and  it is mostly a summer visitor and passage migrant, on average arriving in early April. Most breeding territories are in the west, around reservoir perimeters and the upland streams and rivers. The river Derwent and the Upper  Derwentdale reservoirs are prime examples and hold many pairs in most years. More detail can be found in "Birds of the Sheffield Area". There are few breeding records east of the City. Most have left the breeding areas by the end of September, with passage birds continuing into October and occasionally November, when they can be seen at more easterly localities such as Carr Vale, Old Denaby, RVCP or Thrybergh Res. These photographs were taken on the River Derwent at Chatsworth by John Rochester, on 8th June 2000.
