Canada Goose

It was only as far back as the early 1980's that Canada Goose was reported in the Sheffield Bird Reports as breeding at only one or two localities. The first successful breeding at Redmires for example was in 1983 and was greeted with enthusiasm - a new species on the breeding list after all. But no-one realised at the time how rapidly the local population would increase, until it now breeds at a high proportion of the waters in our recording area. The population of Canada Geese in this country is derived from introduced, feral stock and is generally regarded by land-owners and conservationists alike as a pest species. The top photograph was taken at Thrybergh CP by Ashley Fisher in early February 2001, the lower shot of two adults with young was taken by Richard Hill at Redmires on 18th June 2001. Last updated 24th June 2001.
