These two photographs of a male blackcap were taken by Jim Sherwin in his Millhouses garden during Christmas 2001. The bird was first seen in the garden on 23rd December [2001] and was still visiting well into January [at least]. What we can never be certain about in these circumstances, is whether more than one bird is involved. When we have a number of records over a span of several days or even weeks, is it necessarily the same bird on each occasion, or is there a turnover of different birds? Unless there is a mixture of males and brown capped females visiting, and/or we happen to notice that one of the visitors is ringed whilst another is not, it is usually very difficult to be certain.
