Blackcap

Blackcaps are one of the few warblers which can be seen [or heard] in the Sheffield area more or less throughout the year. After our summer visiting breeding birds leave for warmer climes they are often replaced by continental migrants which over-winter here in small numbers, often visiting sub-urban gardens. The Botanical Gardens is also a regular spot for wintering birds. It is likely that the majority of records in early spring refer to these continental birds reacting to a spot of sunshine or becoming apparent as they move back through the area ahead of our own summer visitors. The above shot, of a male in a Middlewood garden, was taken by Carl Corbidge in spring 1997.
In 2002, Andrew Cannon started trapping passerines as part of his study on Urban Birds. Although not one of his target species, ringing at Upperthorpe in Sheffield produced a small number of Blackcaps during late February and early March. The female shown below was trapped, ringed and photographed by Andrew on 25th February 2002. Last updated 10th March 2002.
