Little Owl

Photographs Copyright © Paul Leonard
I have to admit that Little Owls are one my favourite birds. An introduced species, it is possibly under-recorded in Sheffield. Although mainly found in the SW quarter of the area, with a bit of searching they can be located further west and north on the moorland fringes, although rarely in the higher moorlands. Having said that, I have personally seen birds above Castleton village for example. They can be seen throughout the year and in a variety of settings; farmland, parks, open countryside or even suburban areas. They will nest in old buildings, tree stumps, dry-stone walls or under old bridges, etc. Any of these areas are worth a search at appropriate times. In the breeding season they can often be located by their call, the best description of which is a plaintive, almost mewing, "keeu". The set of photographs here illustrates a couple of different settings; a bird at a roosting site in the top of a shattered Ash, and another pair on the side of an old farm building. The top photograph [2 versions of the same] was taken by Paul Leonard near Greasbrough, Rotherham on 15th March 2001 and the lower photograph by Richard Hill was taken at dusk on 11th March 2001 near Lodge Moor.
